Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is the department created by the federal Canadian government and is responsible for coordinating environmental policies, programs and making sure there’s a clean, safe and sustainable environment in Canada.

In 2017, ECCC invested funds into the Great Lakes Protection Initiative Great Lakes Protection Initiative. The funds invested into this initiative are being used to fulfill the Government of Canada’s commitments to the Canada-United States Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. The priorities of this initiative are to address the environmental challenges that are affecting Great Lakes water quality and ecosystems. One of those priorities is to address these issues by increasing public engagement through citizen science. In 2018 Swim Drink Fish was granted funds from ECCC and became a part of the Great Lakes Protection Initiative to help achieve that goal.

Thanks to this funding from ECCC, Swim Drink Fish is now engaging with and training volunteer citizen scientists to help monitor recreational water quality. The funds allowed Swim Drink Fish to establish water monitoring hubs in different communities on the Great Lakes. The hubs give people the opportunity to learn about and connect with the waters in their communities and take an active role in their protection by helping to collect and share water quality data with the public.
