Your Essential 2026 Polar Bear Plunge Guide

The Polar Bear Plunge is a winter tradition where people take a dip into icy cold waters during the coldest time of year. More than just a thrill, it’s a chance to step out of your comfort zone, embrace the cold, and share a unique experience with friends, family, and your community. Many events also raise money for local charities, making each chilly splash meaningful.

Getting Ready

Jumping into freezing water is no joke, and it’s as much mental as it is physical. Here are a few tips to help you prepare to cold plunge into 2026

  • What to bring: If you have one, a wetsuit can help keep you warm. Water shoes or boots protect your feet, and after the plunge, have warm layers, a towel, a hat, and gloves ready.

Safety First

Safety is the most important part of any plunge:

  • Never go in alone, and always follow event rules.

  • Listen to your body! If you feel dizzy, numb, or unwell, get out immediately.

  • Skip the alcohol before or after the plunge. It makes your body lose heat faster and affects your judgment and coordination, which you definitely need in icy water.

Moving in and Out

Enter the water steadily and with purpose. This is easier said than done, but try to take a deep breath upon entering. It will help if you don’t linger. Once you’ve had your moment, get out quickly and head straight to warmth.

Warming Up

Recovery will be extremely important:

  • Dry off completely and put on warm layers, focusing on your hands, feet, and head first (they lose heat the fastest)

  • Grab a warm, non-alcoholic drink to help your body warm up gradually

  • Gentle movement or stretching can help get your circulation going again

  • Check in with your friends! You can brag now but also, check in to make sure everyone is feeling okay
