About the Artist

Shepard Fairey is an American graphic artist, muralist, illustrator and social activist, who became widely known during the 2008 US presidential election for his Barack Obama Hope poster. As a muralist, Fairey has painted nearly 100 public murals around the world, which include efforts to change the conversation around art and urban landscape. As part of the Burrard Arts Foundation’s rotating public art program, Fairey’s recently unveiled Earth Justice, is a 20-storey mural located at the corner of West Georgia and Burrard streets. According to the artist, the mural is about “respecting and preserving the planet, for Vancouver… is a place with a lot of natural beauty and an environmentally-themed mural would be a reminder to protect its current conditions, climate, and environment.”

Fairey’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian, the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
