Digital Community Specialist

Swim Drink Fish is a Canada-based organization that connects people with water. We help more than 3-million people discover the importance of nature in their lives and provide them with the knowledge and tools they need to safeguard swimmable, drinkable, fishable water. 

As the Digital Community Specialist, your mission is to ensure that every person in the Swim Drink Fish community feels connected to a global movement of people who care about their local waterbody. You will manage our key social media channels to reflect the community’s values and activities. You will create and deliver email communications to inspire and engage the community members. And you will create stories for platforms like Swim Guide ( to help community members better understand and care for their local waters.

This is a full-time position beginning in July 2019.


  • Manage social media channels for Swim Drink Fish’s flagship brands to ensure consistent and responsive engagement with the Swim Drink Fish community.

  • Create and deliver mass emails to Swim Drink Fish community members to engage them in the movement.

  • Assist with a significant update to

  • Assist with the launch of new community engagement features on The Swim Guide and development of features on Great Lakes Guide. 

  • Create content for Swim Drink Fish websites such as to help attract and engage community members.


Applications from candidates with the following qualifications will be considered:

  • Experience managing social media account(s) for an organization or campaign

  • Experience creating and delivering messages with an email service like Mailchimp, Pardot, Squarespace Email Campaigns, etc.

  • Excellent writing skills, including the ability to synthesize information, explain complex scientific or social messages in plain language, an engaging tone, and copy-editing skills.

These are not formal requirements for the position, but may help you succeed in your role as the Digital Community Specialist. If you have skills or abilities in these areas, please highlight them in your application:

  • Basic design skills to help you manipulate images or create simple infographics for social media and website posts.

  • Basic video editing skills. 

  • Familiarity with water quality issues.

  • An interest in activities that get you onto the water, like swimming, paddling, sailing, hiking, photography, camping, citizen science, surfing, etc.

  • Experience working for a nonprofit.

  • Organizational skills like content calendar management and design asset management.

  • The ability to work well with a team, to listen to ideas and different voices and reflect those perspectives in your writing.

  • A genuine enthusiasm for community engagement, including an appreciation for dialogue, community feedback, interviewing people, sharing other people’s stories, etc.
