Ground breaks on $5.4 million waterfront park upgrade - Kingston Whig-Standard - June 28, 2017

While work on Breakwater Park began earlier this week, local politicians picked up their ceremonial shovels for the official start of construction Wednesday.
The park along the shore of Lake Ontario, across King Street from Queen’s University, is to undergo almost a year of renovations that include the addition of a sand beach and a pedestrian bridge to the pier, four-metre-wide walkways, concrete bleachers on the water’s edge, new lights and more trees.
The former public utilities commission pier is to be renamed the Gordon Edgar Downie Pier in honour of The Tragically Hip’s lead singer.
The project design, approved by council in June 2013, in its entirety is budgeted at $5.4 million.
It is being partly funded by a $1-million grant from the federal Canada 150 Community Infrastructure fund.
Swim Drink Fish Canada, formerly known as Lake Ontario Waterkeeper, has also contributed $500,000 from the Weston Family Swim Drink Fish Great Lakes Challenge, which is funded by the W. Garfield Weston Foundation. (Read more...)
