About the Artist

Angela Grossmann is an internationally acclaimed artist best known for her powerfully expressive collages and drawings, exploring issues of human identity. Ranging from simplistic drawings to renderings of the body through the use of collaged and transferred discarded materials, Grossmann has devoted much of her 25-year career to examining themes of displacement and social margins. Blue Angel, on offer in this year’s Swim Drink Fish Gala, is a prime example of her startling figurative paintings on Mylar that centre on the expression of form and colour.

Grossmann has exhibited widely across Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan, and her work can be found in numerous public collections, including the Vancouver Art Gallery, the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), the Glenbow Museum (Calgary), the Museum Abteiberg (Mönchengladbach, Germany). In 2006, the Vancouver-based Grossmann was included in a list of 100 artists who have most influenced students at eleven leading British art schools, including the Royal Academy, Slade and Royal College of Art. In 2017 the Vancouver Club acquired two large-scale paintings from the same series as the painting offered in tonight’s auction.
